Term 2

Term 2

Welcome back to school for Term Two! Our Prep students will continue to focus on settling into school routines and expectations.

Mathematics

Numeracy during Term Two will see the students explore various concepts and learning tasks. Some of the key concepts covered will be:

- Counting, number formation and place value to 20

- Time: daily events, days of the week

- Ordinal number

- Location

- Addition

Reading

Throughout Term Two, the Reading program will focus on a range of routines and strategies to encourage reading accuracy and understanding. We will continue to work on ‘decoding’ strategies to assist students with reading unknown words. These strategies include keeping track of the text, using text clues such as illustrations, and developing letter-sound knowledge, particularly using the initial letter, blending sounds, and stretching through a word. Teachers will also introduce students to comprehension strategies to ensure understanding of texts. These include making predictions, using their prior knowledge, making connections and retelling. They will also become more familiar with different text types (fiction and non-fiction). Guided reading groups and Purposeful Reading Tasks will continue this term, where students can practise specific reading strategies that will target their individual reading goals and needs.

Writing

Teachers will provide students with opportunities to develop and extend their knowledge of sound and letter relationships to assist with their writing. The Writing program will continue with a focus on beginning writing strategies, including using the correct pencil grip, leaving spaces between words, and correctly using upper and lowercase letters.

There will be a significant focus on understanding letter-sound relationships and using letters to represent the sounds heard in words. Students will experiment with different text types, emphasising personal recounts of significant events in their daily lives. ‘Onset and Rime’ will be introduced, which will assist the students in learning about word families, i.e. if they can spell ‘cat’, they should be able to spell ‘rat’ and ‘mat’.

Integrated Studies

The Integrated Studies topic for Term Two is ‘On the Farm’. The students will build on their prior knowledge of farm life and further their understanding of farm animals and produce, life on a farm and the need for farms.

On Wednesdays, students will also continue participating in ‘The Resilience Project’ and ‘Respectful Relationships’ as part of the Student Engagement and Wellbeing program.

Through our daily learning programs, children will continue investigating the school’s five values: Learning, Resilience, Teamwork, Collaboration, and Respect.

A few reminders:

  • Ensure all clothing and belongings are clearly labelled with your child’s full name.

  • Hats are NOT required for Term 2 and Term 3.

  • Continue to check your child’s bag or reading satchels for notes and forms that may be given out during the day. There will be more correspondence as the year progresses.

  • Readers are swapped weekly. Please ensure reading satchels and all books are coming back to school every day.

  • Continue to sign and write a brief comment in reading journals every evening.

  • Continue contacting the school via the app or phone, explaining your child’s absence as soon as possible.

  • Instruction time commences at 9am. If you wish to speak to your child’s teacher, please make an appointment outside class times.

  • Advise your child’s class teacher if your child is being collected by someone other than a parent or guardian.

  • The Show and Tell planner for this term is located inside the yellow reading journal.

  • Semester 1 reports will be available on Compass in the last week of Term 2.

The Prep teachers appreciate your cooperation and help with all the above matters!
