At Keilor Primary, we take great pride in ensuring every child is supported to achieve success and reach their full potential. We understand that success looks different for every child, so we work to ensure the teaching and learning are differentiated to the individual needs of our students.

Based on the Victorian Curriculum, the teaching and learning at Keilor Primary equip students with the knowledge, skills and understandings for the 21st century. By delivering an innovative curriculum that considers students' interests and their learning profiles, we aim to develop confident individuals who will be empowered to one day change the world.

Literacy

At Keilor Primary School Reading and Viewing is an integral part of the curriculum. Our students are encouraged to develop a love of reading through exposure to a range of texts types, genres and topics. Students are exposed to these text types through accessing books within our school library, classroom libraries, levelled text baskets, a variety of interactive programs such as Literacy Planet, and Reading A-Z and through a range of teaching approaches such as modelled, shared, guided, reciprocal reading and book clubs. They have opportunities to meet with their teachers in one-on-one conferences and set goals based on their individual needs.

We believe in making the transition from learning to read to reading to learn. This ensures that students develop the skills that allow them to decode and read with fluency, phrasing and expression and then deepen their understanding of texts by drawing on a variety of comprehension strategies. The comprehension strategies - predicting, making connections, questioning, visualising, clarifying, inferring, summarising, synthesising and thinking critically about the text – allow students to gain a greater understanding of the texts at a deeper level and become an active and engaged participant in the text.

Numeracy

At Keilor Primary School we strongly believe in developing students who are problem solvers and are fluent in mathematics. Our students are given opportunities to explore numeracy concepts and underlying understandings and make links across all strands through a hands-on and engaging approach to mathematics.

Our students are provided with many opportunities to practise the four mathematical proficiencies – understanding, fluency, problem solving and reasoning which allows them to respond to a variety of mathematical problems by efficiently selecting appropriate methods.
